PPLI: The Only Asset Without a (Tax) Tradeoff

The tax system runs on tradeoffs. Lower rates come with risk, the basis step-up comes with estate tax, and assets moved out of the estate give up the step-up. I first learned about PPLI in 2015, a team of advisers walked me through the one asset that skips all of it - a $100 million+ life insurance policy for a sports team owner.

This week's Secret Art of Planning, my weekly tax planning newsletter, addresses private placement life insurance - the investment that grows untaxed, pays out untaxed, and never enters the estate. The catch is whether your family can live with it.

At Frazier & Deeter, we work through decisions like these every day for our clients. Follow me to subscribe to my weekly newsletter. Also check out a new family office article every Thursday with Jeffrey Rosen, CPA, CGMA, MBA.
